English: The Cyrus Cylinder was discovered by an Assyro-British archaeologist Hormuzd Rassam in March 1879, during a lengthy programme of excavations in Mesopotamia carried out for the British Museum. The Cyrus Cylinder is one of the most famous objects tohave survived from the ancient world. It was inscribed in Babyloniancuneiform on the orders of the Persian King Cyrus the Great(559-530 BCE) after he captured Babylon in 539 BCE. |
